This striking, hand-carved cedar wood mask features a dual-toned composition that masterfully blends a dark, natural cedar wood foundation with a vibrant, highly detailed polychromatic upper section. The Base: Skeletal Visage
Design: The lower half of the sculpture serves as the foundation, depicting a stylized skeletal face or skull. It features deep, hollowed eye sockets, a pronounced nasal cavity, and prominently carved teeth.

Finish: This section is left unpainted, showcasing the natural grain of the wood. The rich, dark amber and honey-brown tones of the cedar are deeply enhanced by a protective pure Tung oil finish, creating a smooth, dark contrast against the brightly painted upper half.

Accents: Small, geometric blocks of color (yellow, teal, red, and purple) are inlaid or painted around the cheekbones and jawline, bridging the natural wood with the colorful headdress above.

The Upper Relief: Mythological Interlace
Rising seamlessly from the skull is an elaborate, deeply carved headdress composed of interlocking figures and deities in traditional Mayan and Aztec styles:

The Turquoise Serpent: A dominant, vibrant blue and turquoise serpent winds its way through the center of the composition. Its body is meticulously detailed with carved scales and cross-hatched textures.

The Crimson Figure: Intertwined with the blue serpent is a striking red and orange motif—resembling a stylized bird or secondary serpent head—adding dynamic movement to the carving.

Deity Profiles and Animal Spirits: To the right of the central serpents, the natural wood reveals the serene, carved profile of a human face or deity. Directly beside it is a yellow jaguar figure adorned with classic black rosettes, peering outward through a carved negative space.

Color Palette and Texture
Contrast: The piece relies on the dramatic contrast between the dark, oiled cedar and a bright, traditional Mesoamerican color palette featuring turquoise, crimson, golden yellow, and deep purple.

Textural Details: The artisan has utilized a variety of carving techniques, incorporating smooth sanded surfaces, deep relief cutouts, intricate cross-hatching on the serpent's underbelly, and precise geometric line work to give the piece exceptional depth and tactile interest.
