Overall Composition & Thematic Focus
The sculpture is centered around a dramatic visual of a skull encased within the gaping maw of a dual-natured creature. The piece heavily incorporates vibrant, traditional colors (turquoise, jade green, vivid yellow, and crimson) contrasted against natural and darkly stained wood, emphasizing a theme of duality and transformation.

The Inner Mask (Central Figure)
The focal point is a stylized, skeletal face positioned within the open jaws:

The Cranium: The upper forehead is carved and painted to resemble a mosaic of bright blue and turquoise tiles, reminiscent of ancient jade or turquoise inlay work.

The Face: The lower portion of the skull is stained a dark, rich brown. It features deep, hollowed-out eye sockets and a nasal cavity.

Geometric Details: The cheek and mouth areas are decorated with intricately carved, natural-wood stepped fretwork (often known as xicalcoliuhqui), which forms a stylized, toothy grin and adds a strong geometric anchor to the center of the piece.

The Outer Headdress & Jaws (Duality)
The outer helmet structure is split vertically, representing two distinct powerful animal spirits:

The Left Side (Jaguar): Painted in a bright yellow with black spots, this side clearly represents a jaguar, a symbol of martial prowess and the underworld. It features a carved feline snout and ear.

The Right Side (Reptilian/Serpent): Painted in a rich green with overlapping, scale-like or feather-like carvings and a striking red eye. This side evokes imagery of a feathered serpent or reptilian deity.

The Jaws & Fangs: Four massive, unpainted wooden fangs curve inward from the top and bottom jaws, framing the inner skull. At the very bottom, a prominent, bright red bifurcated tongue hangs downward, a common motif for earthly or underworld deities.

Carving Techniques & Accents

Relief and Openwork: The artist uses deep relief carving to separate the different textures (the smooth bone of the fangs, the scales of the serpent, the geometric teeth). The hollow eyes of the central skull allow light to pass through, creating dynamic shadows.

Side Adornments: The mask features cylindrical pegs protruding from the cheekbones (resembling traditional ear spools) and vividly painted, curved blue and green elements dangling from the lower sides, adding to the structural width and ceremonial aesthetic.
