• This is a beautiful carved sculpture representing the Mayan Culture
This contemporary wood carving is a hand-crafted "fusion" piece that blends symbolic iconography from both Mexica (Aztec) and Maya cultures. The Artesano of this piece is from the regions of Yucatan and it represent Mesoamerican cosmology through a vertical narrative of sacred figures.
Key Symbolic Elements
The Feathered Serpent (Quetzalcoatl / Kukulkan): The dominant figure coiling around the sculpture is the Feathered Serpent, a creator deity associated with the wind, sky, and learning. Its form—combining a snake (earth) with feathers (sky)—represents the bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds.
The Sun Stone (Aztec Calendar): The circular disk prominently featured is a reproduction of the Aztec Sun Stone. At its center is the face of Tonatiuh, the sun god, whose outstretched tongue (often depicted as a sacrificial blade) symbolizes the requirement of offerings to keep the cosmos in motion.
The Jaguar Mask: A central face is frequently depicted emerging from the jaws of a jaguar. In Mesoamerican belief, the jaguar represents power, the night, and the underworld (Xibalba). It was a symbol of elite warriors and spirit guides (nahualli).
Life and Death Duality: The inclusion of a skull alongside a living face represents the core Mesoamerican concept of existential duality. Death is not seen as an end but as a necessary stage for rebirth and the continuation of the life cycle.
Craftsmanship and Materials
Traditional Woods: This sculpture is carved from cedar hardwoods which is prized for its aromatic resin and ease of carving when wet.
Technique: Artisans use a combination of machetes for initial shaping and fine chisels for intricate relief work. The dark, polished finish is often achieved through natural oils or wax to highlight the wood's grain and the depth of the carving.
